When It's Over

Football had to end sometime.  Unfortunately it ended with a 26-24 loss to Valley Christain.  Cade and his teammates gave it everything they had, but it just didn't work out this time.  Ryan always says that "the sun will come up in the morning," but Lauren countered that "what if it rains."  Well, the sky is bright and clear, but it's still a little dreary around here.

I only had my cell phone to take a picture, but I wanted to capture the look of a "warrior". These past few games, Cade has played like a man possessed.  He's been banged up and bruised, but not broken.  I can't tell you how many times I was near tears, both with pride and with sorrow.  He and his friends never gave up, never got down and always came fighting back.  After the pain subsides, they will be able to draw from those lessons of loyalty, preparation, determination and perseverance.  And in the end, that's what makes champions.

Those boys played great. They kept coming back when I thought it couldn't happen.

It sounds like it was a close and tough game. And his last HS football game. Those kind of games can be rough.

Our HS team made it to the state 4A championship for the first time in 24 years only to get crushed. I hate those kind of games too.

But I am sure he looks back at football with lots of fond memories. I I bet you were in the stands cheering the whole way!

I also got a little choked up as I watched Cade and his friends play their hearts out yesterday. And what was even more impressive was the times I watched them knock one of the Valley Christian players on their backside, then hold out a hand to help them up. I saw great dedication, support and sportsmanship exhibited by those boys. You're right....that's what makes them true champions!

You'd think that after leaving that behind 17 years ago that I would be able to handle it a bit better... But I get nervous, excited, frustrated, happy, angry, etc., etc. At the end of the game my heart hurt for those boys. I had such a great experience in high school with sports (even when I rode the pine in basketball) that I felt a little of that heartache again to see it end for them.
Give Cade a high five and a fist bump for me.
