Life in a Small Town
I love my little town. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I am so glad that I grew up here and I'm glad that I get to raise my kids here. I love the summer sunsets, the color of monsoon skies, and the smell of fresh cut grass. I love that my kids' first grade teacher is their Sunday School teacher, and that she attends all of their ball games. I love the way people pull together in times of sadness, but also in times in happiness. Truthfully, if I had to choose it all over again, I'd still pick St. Johns.
That being said....
Saturday I made out my grocery list for the week. On the very top was "chicken". I had planned a bunch of meals using the ever so simple chicken breast. In fact, all of my meals used the ever so versatile chicken breast. I had planned on going out of town to grocery shop, but Ryan had mocked me saying that he was certain Wilburs sold chicken. But when I got to the meat aisle, there was not a chicken breast to be found. Not a fresh one, not a frozen one. I would have liked boneless breasts, but I could have settled for de-boning my own chicken. It was not meant to be. My whole week's menu crashed around me right there in aisle one. I could hardly muster the energy to get milk, bread and eggs after that.
Needless to say, we took that trip out of town after all.

I am so very jealous you get to live there! You are very lucky! I am so glad people like you and ryan stayed! Thats what makes it home is coming back to people we know!
p.s. sucks about chicken....I have a plethra of them here!
Funny...Quinn gave me the same speech when I said I wanted to go to Show Low to get groceries. So I got them here. I had a little better luck, they just didn't have my yogurt that I like to eat for breakfast everyday. So I ended up having someone else pick me some up when they went to Show Low. Last I looked they STILL didn't have anymore. I just might have to shop out of town this time just for my yougurt!
I'm sure one of your neighbors have a chicken you could kill, pluck and roast up.
I love reading on Facebook where someone from SJ is going somewhere and a bunch of people comment asking them to pick up this and that.
It takes a certain type of people to survive living in a small town, I'm not one of them!!
Next time you need chicken, call me.
I love SJ too...glad you could give that life to your kids. Beautiful picture by the way....
Ha! Luv it. So very very true. We are in a small town as well but our only grocery store was open all night. Now we have a Wal-mart and very few trips to "town" anymore. When I go to SJ though it kills me that everything is closed down by 8pm. I should know this but it gets me everytime!
I too have to adjust to the limits of Wilburs every time we are in SJ. Sorry about the chicken! But SJ is a pretty great place!
mike has VERY fond memories of growing up in SJ. he makes it sound like its right off the silver screen.
